Né à Macao en 1937, Tang Chia (de son vrai nom Huang Tang ou Tong Gai) quitte sa ville natale pour rejoindre Hong Kong en 1952. Il y deviendra l'un des directeurs en arts martiaux les plus reconnus de la Shaw Brothers.
Avant cela, il travailla dans une troupe théâtrale et étudia l'opéra cantonais avec notamment Chan Kam-tong. C'est d'ailleurs avec ce dernier qu'il apparaîtra pour la première fois sur un écran en tant que figurant dans Romance Of Fuji Mountain (1954). Admirateur du "style du Nord", il deviendra le disciple de Simon Yuen et c'est celui-ci qui le conseilla de devenir cascadeur dans l'industrie du cinéma. Il rejoindra ainsi la série des populaires Wong Fei-hong (avec Kwan Tak Hing). 1963 est une année charnière puisqu'il collabora pour la première fois avec Liu Chia-liang à la réalisation des scènes d'action de >South Dragon / Dragon Phoenix. Ils réitéreront leur collaboration en 1966 pour Jade Bow. Un duo de Chorégraphes est alors né, et c'est ensemble qu'ils vont contribuer à d'innombrables succès de la SB (principalement des films de Chang Cheh comme One-Armed Swordsman, The Boxer From Shantung).
Quand Liu Chia-liang devint à son tour réalisateur en 1975, Tang Chia prit alors du galon et fut nommé réalisateur en chef des scènes d'actions pour les films d'autres metteurs en scène comme Chu Yuan et Suen Chung (Killer Clans, The Magic Blade, Avenging Eagle...). C'est donc à juste titre que l'on peut considérer Tang Chia comme l'un des maîtres de l'action de la Shaw Brothers. Sa renommée fut telle que l'on a même pu le rencontrer dans des films occidentaux comme par exemple The Sand Pebbles (La canonnière du Yang Tsé) (1966) où une fois de plus il dirigeait les scènes d'action.
A la fin de sa carrière, il se tournera vers la télévision où il s'occupera comme à son son habitude de diverses chorégraphies.
