Biography |
|
In loving memory of Angela Yu Chien
Angela Yu Chien was born in Beijing in a large family of five children. Her family moved to Taiwan when Angela was 5 years old and as she grew into a teenager she decided to pursue an acting career. She went to Hong Kong in 1960 and enrolled in the Shaw Brothers studio's Southern Drama Group.
In the beginning of her career with Shaw Brothers, Angela landed a few supporting roles portraying her as a sweet, gentle girl in movies such as The Dancing Millionairess (1964), in which she appeared as Loh Ti's soft spoken secretary. She even guest-starred in a German-Swiss production, A Melody of Hong Kong, as a charming oriental girl. Angela landed her first big role, backing up Lin Dai in The Blue and The Black (1966). She excelled in her performance and out-acted co-stars Linda Lin Dai, Pat Ting Hung and Polly Shang-Kwan and went on to win a best supporting actress award for her role.
However, as Angela blossomed into stardom, she drifted away from her sweet, charming girl image and was unfortunately type-cast as a femme fatale, appearing mostly in seductive, sexy, man-eating roles. Along with Fanny Fan and Tina Chin Fei, Angela was considered to belong to Shaw Brothers's "Bombshell Trinity" in the late sixties. Although Angela had the talent and versatility to play different roles, she was groomed to epitomize the bombshell persona.
Sadly, Angela passed away on April 10th, 2004 after losing her battle with cancer. She will be always remembered as one of the most talented and beautiful Chinese silver screen legends. Angela is greatly missed.
