Applause Pictures was launched in April 2000 by Peter Chan Ho-sun, Teddy Chen and Allan Fung. The company was created to forge new links between the film industries and film-makers of Asia Pacific. With friends and contacts in Korea, Thailand, Japan, Singapore, and its home-base Hong Kong, this pan-Asian production house sets out to syndicate financing, promote co-production agreements, encourage the exchange of talent on both sides of the camera, and to expand the regional and global distribution possibilities for the new pan-Asian films.
The company's current management bring a wealth of experience to the challenges ahead. Peter Chan, Chief Executive is a prolific director and producer. He has made an indelible mark on both sides of the Pacific with his Hong Kong comedy-dramas TOM, DICK & HARRY and HE'S A WOMAN, SHE'S A MAN, the commercially and critically acclaimed COMRADES: ALMOST A LOVE STORY (voted one of the Ten Best movies of 1997 by Time Magazine, and swept a record breaking nine Hong Kong Film Awards), and his Dreamworks SKG production THE LOVE LETTER. He has recently finished directing the Hong Kong segment of THREE.
Allan Fung, Partner has been expediting the international distribution of Hong Kong films for over a decade; he was previously a director and producer, and currently runs Panorama Entertainment, a leading Hong Kong-based film, music and video distribution company which he founded. Patricia Cheng (Vice President of Distribution & Marketing) has been an active member of the Hong Kong entertainment industry since the early 1980s, working for a number of production studios (including Shaw Brothers) before freelancing as a production manager. From 1999-2001, Cheng served as managing director and producer at Hong Kong production company Red On Red. Jojo Yuet-chun Hui (Vice President, Production) has collaborated with Peter Chan on many of his projects, as associate producer and assistant director. Most recently, she served as producer on many of Applause's projects.
To date, Applause Pictures has worked with a select few of Asia's best film-making talents. Projects completed include JAN DARA (co-production with Thailand, directed by Nonzee Nimibutr who gained worldwide attention with NANG NAK), ONE FINE SPRING DAY (co-production with Korea and Japan, directed by Hur Jin-ho of CHRISTMAS IN AUGUST fame) and THE MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE (co-production with China, directed by Huang Jianxin), and the horror film THE EYE (co-production with Singapore, directed by the Pang Brothers of BANGKOK DANGEROUS acclaim). Currently in production is a three-part mystery omnibus titled THREE (a first of its kind co-production with Korea and Thailand, utilizing three different directors).
Applause's upcoming projects include: two new movies from the Pang Brothers, a sex comedy and a martial-arts flick, and WAITING, an English-language epic romance based on Ha Jin's award-winning novel, which will be directed by Peter Chan.
