Biography

Working first on video clips, Daniel Lee began as artistic director, then director assistant on several films of the famous director Ann Hui. His first production is a martial art tv serie, He directed What Price Survival, his vision of The One Armed Swordman by Chang Cheh located in Mandchourie in the Twenties.

Inspired at the same time by Chinese traditional painting and Chambara in its colors and compositions, this first full-length movie reveals a good director, what did not escape to Tsui Hark which made him direct The Eight Assassins, a mini-serie based on the exploits of Wong fei-hong (Vincent Chiu Man Chuk and the other actors of Once upon a time in china), and Black Mask. Due to exceding budget, requirements of Charles Heung, Tsui Hark and Jet Li, Daniel Lee lost the control of his work.

Recognized painter and follower of a resolutely artistic cinema, Daniel Lee has the appearance of an exception in the HK cinematographic landscape. And even if he hates comics, his aesthetic direction and his love for the graphic art made of him the ideal director for a super-men movie like Black Mask. Lately he directs a quite mysterious dramatic work Moonlight Express and A Fighter Blues.
