Born in Suzhou in 1924, Ouyang Shafei was a screen legend – she made more than 200 films between 1937 and 1990. She began her career at 17 and made several movies in Mandarin for the Shanghai film studios. Her first success came with Spy Number One in 1946. At the same time she married her director, Tu Guangqi – they were one of the most famous couples after the war.

The political turmoil in China early 1950s forced them to move to the British colony Hong Kong. However, the career of Ouyang Shafei didn’t slow down at all. On the contrary, between 1951 and 1952, she was one of the busiest actresses in the HK film industry, making 17 films during this short period, most of them being directed by her husband. Their collaboration that lasted until 1956 suffered a lot and became one of favorite topic of the local media. Because of this pressure, they decided to go their separate way.

In the early 1960s, the career of Ouyang Shafei took a different turn. Then in her forties, she obviously couln’t land the same glamorous roles that made her famous. Still, she signed a contract with the Shaw Brothers for which she made several films until the late 1970s, including Till the End of Time, Hong Kong Nocturne, The Fourteen Amazons, The Bastard or Death Duel. Used to the characters of mother and aunty, she pocketed the Best Supporting Role Award twice.

In 1979, she married again and relocated in the USA. She didn’t stay long in America as her spouse passed away the following year. Back in Asia, in Taiwan to be exact, she worked mainly for the local TV networks. Later, she came back to HK where she appeared many times on TV and on the big screen. She retired in 1990 and one of her latest films was A Chinese Ghost Story 2.

Living in the USA for a few years after that, she suffered a bad fall in 2009. According to her daughter her health condition declined a lot since the fall.

Ou-Yang Sha-Fei passed away on 3rd August 2010 in the evening. She was buried in Salt Lake City, next to her husband.
