Biography |
 |
Wong Kar Wai was born in Shanghai in 1958 and moved to Hong Kong at 5. He graduated from the local Polytechnic School (in graphic design) in 1980. Fond of cinema since his youth, Wong Kar Wai joined the Production Training Course of TVB (HK TV channel). This good experience permitted him to become production assistant in 1981 on series such as Don't Look Now, a popular soap-opera at the time. In 1982, Wong Kar Wai left TVB and became scriptwriter.
His most memorable scripts between 1982 and 1987 were for Once upon has Rainbow (82), Chase a Fortune (85) and above all Patrick Tam's film The Final Victory (87) with Tsui Hark and Eric Tsang. Patrick Tam helped Wong Kar Wai out and in 1988 to make As Tears Go By, with Maggie Cheung, Andy Lau and Jacky Cheung. Thanks to the success of the film, Wong Kar Wai made in 1990 Days Of Being Wild with some of the most acclaimed actors from Hong Kong. Acclaimed by critics, the film won five HK Film Awards, but wasn't as well received by the audience and made a poor score at the box office. In 1992, Wong Kar Wai worked in China on Ashes Of Time for nearly two years. Fed up by the lengthy production of the movie, he made his masterpiece Chungking Express during the post production of Ashes Of Time. Chungking Express was shot in three weeks and with hand-held camera, thus providing a thrilling and unique view of Hong Kong hectic live. This film gave him recognition all over the world and especially in Europe and the USA. The original third part of Chungking Express became another movie, Fallen Angels, an urban poem, pushing all the cinematic tricks displayed in Chungking Express to the extreme (a very wide angle used to shot in tiny area).
The next film, Happy Together was made almost entirely in Argentina (Buenos Aires, Patagonia and Mendoza), with some sequences in Taipei and Hong Kong. The story of two gay men searching for lost love won Wong Kar Wai the Best director Award at the1998 Cannes film festival. The strange and witty side of Wong Kar Wai remains however his friendship with director Jeff Lau. Their work together is a great departure from Wong Kar Wai auteur films. They made together the non-sensical comedy Eagle Shooting Heroes, but also Legendary, la Rose Noire, Saviour of the Soul, Haunted Cop Shop, and the 2002 Chinese New Year comedy Chinese Odyssey 2002.
