Singaporean director Kelvin Tong is the film reviewer for The Straits Times, Singapore’s most popular English newspaper. He is also a member of the NETPAC / FIPRESCI film critics association and has served as a jury member for the Silver Screen Awards.
His first short film, “Moveable Feast”, which he wrote and co-directed, won The Best Short Film Award at the Singapore International Film Festival in 1996. The film has traveled well on the festival circuit as well as being shown on TV in France, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Kelvin Tong is best known for his award-winning movie - “Eating Air” (1999). Already established as a brand name in cutting-edge Singapore cinema, “Eating Air” won The Young Cinema Award at the 2000 Singapore International Film Festival and the FIPRESCI prize at the 2000 Stockholm International Film Festival.
His new film “The Maid” is his first attempt at the horror genre, shot in 35mm for Raintree Pictures, starring some of the hippest cast of Singapore. It is the biggest box office hit for a Singaporean film in Malaysia and Singapore this year.
