If you wish to share your own photos of filming locations, please send your material to
hkfilminglocation@hkcinemagic.com
.

Film Pilgrimage also itemizes some of this filming locations, but in traditional Chinese.

Ever since film crews ventured outside soundstages and studio lots, Hong Kong has been a rather cinema-friendly city. Production teams shot on the streets with or without permits, recording forever on film some of the most interesting locations: rooftops, restaurants, alleyways, harbours, malls, etc.

We have attempted to map the different places in HK appearing on HK films (mainly, but we expanded a bit our horizons, see the list of pages). Aware that many actual locations have now disappeared and it is impossible to itemize every places seen in every film, we have listed below some of the most interesting places, worth visiting. For places marked in Google Maps we have included an actual photograph of the location (not a "behind the scene" photo of a dressed set), a Youtube clip, and a small comment on the location and its relevance in the film(s) it appears.

An embedded map is available at the bottom of each page with a link redirecting to Google Maps. Maps can be zoomed in and out for a better view of the area or the markers.

Hong Kong is roughly divided into two areas, the main Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. That’s how we’ve based our mapping, dividing further by districts or groups of districts. Of course more areas will appear as we gather more material.

This feature is an ongoing project and if you own a photograph of a place in HK that appeared in a movie, you can also contribute.
If you spot mistakes or find that a place no longer exists, email us at hkfilminglocation@hkcinemagic.com.

Youtube

Central & Western District

Central & Western District --Plenty of locations and landmarks in Central, the so-called business centre of HK, and Sheung Wan have survived the spread of the concrete development and the handover. The district offers some remnants of the past colonial era, which have inspired filmmakers such as Wong Kar-wai, Johnnie To or even Peter Chan. (Map of the area)
Info on the district can be found on the Home Affairs Department website.

Hop Kee Store, Shelley Street /

new

Location: Shelley Street (between Caine Road and Prince's Terrace), Central, Hong Kong Island

(Adolphus Edward Shelley).
(Kelly Lin)
May,

Shelley Street is named after the first Auditor General of Hong Kong, Adolphus Edward Shelley. It is a popular tourist attraction in Hong Kong Island.
Some movies were shot here or nearby.
In Fulltime Killer, Chin (Kelly Lin) works in a video club called ‘Hollywood’ at 40A Shelley Street. This club has now been replaced by a consignment shop.
In Chungking Express, in a Hop Kee Store on Shelley Street, after Caine Road, Ah Wu / PC223 (Takeshi Kaneshiro) called his ex-girlfriend, May, the night before his 25th birthday. When he hears a male voice on the phone, he finally admits to himself that his feelings for May have expired. He runs down the escalators shouting "Bruce Willis, I’ll kill you" (according to the English subtitles).

Ice House Street /

new

Starting Point of the last minute: Junction between Ice House Street & Queen's Road, Central 「

End of the last minute: Junction between Ice House Street & Des Voeux Road, Central 「

Location: Ice House Street, Queen's Road, Ice House Street & Des Voeux Road, Central
Film: Running on Karma 大隻佬 (2003) / Dir: Johnnie To, Wai Ka-fai 杜琪峰,韋家輝

In this video, the most sentimental scene of Running on Karma, Big (Andy Lau) and Lee Fung Yee (Cecilia Cheung) are seen walking hand in hand from Queen's Road Central, then along Ice House Street towards Des Voeux Road in Central. They spend their last minute together. The song theme performed by Anthony Wong Yiu Ming adds romanticism to this touching moment.

new

The Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong Central Club is the old headquarter of the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong. It was designed by the Chicago YMCA and opened in 1918. The club was built with red bricks and offers a blend of Chinese and Western architectural influences. In 1927, the famous Chinese writer Lu Xun gave a speech here.
In Running on Karma, Inspector Lee Fung Yee (Cecilia Cheung) stays in front of the club all day long under the wind and the rain as she’s waiting for Big (Andy Lau). This night, Lee Fung Yee learns what is karma and how her own fate is tied to Big’s.

White House, Mt. Davis

new

Location: A Disused House known by locals as ‘White House,’ junction between Victoria Road and Mt. Davis Path, Western District, HK Island
Film: 2046 (2004) / Dir: Wong Kar-wai

At the junction of Victoria Road and Mount Davis Path, there is a white house enclosed by walls and barbwires. This house has neither name nor street number. It is only known by locals as the ‘White House.’ It is said that this White House served, under the British ruling, as a place for the Police Department to detain political prisoners. During the 1967 riots many leftists, such as movie stars Fu Qi and Shi Hui, were held captive here.
Now the White House is vacant and is used as a movie location from time to time. In Wong Kar-Wai’s 2046 (2004), the White House becomes the Oriental Hotel.

The Oriental Hotel in 2046 (2004)

In Ang Lee’s Lust, Caution, it is used as the secret home of Mr. Yee (Tony Leung Chiu-wai) in Hong Kong. The strong political background of the house adequately matches the atmosphere of this film.

Guangdong Investment Tower /

Location: 148 Connaught Road Central, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong

A classic scene in Infernal Affairs shows Superintendent Wong (Anthony Wong Chau-sang) falling from the rooftop of the 28-storey Guangdong Investment Tower after being pushed by Sam’s (Eric Tsang) henchmen. Wong lands on the taxi behind undercover Yan (Tony Leung Chiu-wai). The song "Farewell... Police" slowly starts playing. The mood abruptly changes from thrilling to sad and desperate. The Guangdong Investment Tower has become Wong’s grave.

Location: 56 Conduit Rd, Central,Hong Kong (junction between Castle Road & Conduit Road)

This part of Castle Road is located near the Dr. Sun Yat-sen Museum of Kom Tong Hall. It intersects with Seymour Road, Robinson Road and Conduit Road. The Castle Road stone wall is renowned and its nostalgic look made it an excellent choice for filming locations.
In Days of Being Wild, police officer Tide (Andy Lau) cheers up a Su Li-Zhen (Maggie Cheung) abandoned by Yuddy (Leslie Cheung). Every time one walks by the walls of Castle Road and Conduit Road, one recalls the sad and nostalgic Xavier Cugat’s Perfidia used in the film to express Tide’s loneliness.

Shek Tong Tsui /

Location: Hill Road, Shek Tong Tsui, Hong Kong

Shek Tong Tsui is located east of Kennedy Town and west of Sai Ying Pun, in the HK Island. In the early 20th century, Shek Tong Tsui was a notorious place for prostitution. Following a fire that destroyed many brothels in Possession Street, Governor Matthew Nathan ordered in 1904 that all remaining houses of prostitution of Sheung Wan be moved to Shek Tong Tsui. The prostitution economy was used to develop the area. Shek Tong Tsui thus became a red light district, where pornography, gambling dens and drug flourished. At this time, bordellos were found in Hill Road, South Lane and Woo Hop Street. The quarter has since developed into a normal area without illegal activities.
In Rouge, the love affair between Fleur (Anita Mui) and Chan Chen-Pang (Leslie Cheung) starts and ends there.

Bank Street /

Location: Central, HONG KONG
Film: Days of Being Wild 阿飛正傳 (1990) / Dir: Wong Kar-wai 王家衛

I’m not entirely sure this place is the exact filming spot, but the style of the clock and gate is so similar to the shot of the conversation between Tide (Andy Lau) and Su Li-zhen (Maggie Cheung). In this shot, Su swears she will forget Yuddy (Leslie Cheung) starting from this minute.
