Page 2 : Coming to Hong Kong

During the very busy end of the 1980s and the early 1990s, the Hong Kong film industry used a regular stable of western actors to appear in their productions -- the gweilos. Among them, Jonathan Isgar managed to get some of the biggest part possible. Remember, Jackson, the evil American merchant from Once Upon a Time in China opposite Jet Li or the comical Tasza from Operation Condor. Also worth noting, for the most adventurous of you, the amazing Catman ! A feat made even more impressive by the fact he had no martial arts skills per se or special knowledge of Cantonese. A real dude on and off the screen, Jonathann Isgar has kindly agreed to talk more about himself in this exclusive interview. Enjoy!

Background

HKCinemagic: Despite my extensive research about your background in Australia I didn’t get any clear information. According to some source, you had stage acting experience there. Can you confirm it?
Jonathan Isgar: Ha, don’t’ believe everything you read, I think I even had the balls to put on one CV that I had been in Mad Max. There's an old saying:, "as honest as an actor’s CV."

HKCinemagic: How would you describe your professional acting career before you left Australia?
Jonathan Isgar: Not much to talk about there, a couple of TV commercials, bits on stage.

HKCinemagic: From what I know, you are fond of surfing. Is that right? Is it the only sport you like to practice?
Jonathan Isgar: Now it’s bikes, I have a couple of old vintage motorbikes in Delhi I like to tour on and I enjoy trekking in Nepal, ride up to Kathmandu then go for a walk. I also do Yoga. My interest in the water left after 18 months working on commercial boats, although I am feeling the urge to take up diving again, I’m living in Bangkok and the call from the Islands is hard to ignore.
